POWER OF PRODUCE – POP!

What is POP?

The Power of Produce (POP) Club provides a fun opportunity for children ages 2-18 to engage in the local food system through conversations directly with farmers, educational games and demonstrations, and exposure to new fruits and vegetables. In addition to participating in educational activities, POP Club kids receive vouchers to spend at the market, allowing them to make their own shopping decisions at the market.

POP Events

At the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market, we often provide opportunities for children to engage in fun activities and they get $5 vouchers to spend at the market. For example, during September we had “bowling with pumpkins” and kids received a $5 voucher to spend. It was a great day with lots of fun.

We often provide an opportunity for children to take just two bites of a featured fruit or vegetable and they receive a $5 voucher to spend at the market. There are lots of other ways children can participate in POP to gain their $5 voucher.

Benefits of POP

The program helps kids in the community have fresh healthy foods to eat, and teaches them how to purchase goods and manage money. Vendors teach them how products grow, how they are harvested, and the many types of produce available.

It also helps the vendors by supporting them and it keeps the money in the community. This becomes a family experience with parents routinely bringing their children back to the market to enjoy the benefits and fun of POP.

Watch for lots of POP events at The Downtown South Boston Farmers Market and be sure to bring your children. They will not only have fun, but will learn more about nutrition and the origins of food to help them make better food choices!
