POWER OF PRODUCE CLUB FOR KIDS AGES 2-18
Thanks to Sentara Health for the Sentara Cares Grant which helps fund the POP Club events and activities. They make it possible for us to reach more kids in the community and provide them with fresh produce, information, and education on healthy living.
The Downtown South Boston Farmers Market offers a FREE kids program for ages 2-18: Power of Produce Club (PoP Club) .
Each child participating in the program receives $5 vouchers when they participate in events. Vouchers can be used at the Market for fresh produce and other designated healthy items. Kids receive their voucher each time they participate in a POP event at the Market. They also participate to receive prizes and giveaways throughout the year.
The goal of the POP Club is to empower children to make healthy choices when selecting food to eat. The program offers a chance for children to explore the Farmers Market and learn about the different varieties of fruits and vegetables, while also learning about how food is grown, by connecting them with local farmers.
Registration and check-in is located at the Market Manager’s desk at the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market.
If you would like to schedule a presentation about the POP Club for your classroom, organization or other group of students, please email the Market Manager. We welcome an opportunity to spread the word!
MORE ABOUT POP
The Power of Produce (POP) Club provides a fun opportunity for children ages 2-18 to engage in the local food system through conversations directly with farmers, educational games and demonstrations, and exposure to new fruits and vegetables. In addition to participating in educational activities, POP Club kids receive vouchers to spend at the market, allowing them to make their own shopping decisions at the market.
POP EVENTS
At the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market, we often provide opportunities for children to engage in fun activities and they get $5 vouchers to spend at the market. The Market Season Opening is March 16, 2024. There are lots of POP Club events planned throughout the year.
Kids will make their own market bag, create a colorful shamrock project, create a bird feeder for Earth Day, and so much more. Visit our calendar page to keep up with all of the upcoming events.
BENEFITS OF POP
The program helps kids in the community have fresh healthy foods to eat, and teaches them how to purchase goods and manage money. Vendors teach them how products grow, how they are harvested, and the many types of produce available.
It also helps the vendors by supporting them and it keeps the money in the community. This becomes a family experience with parents routinely bringing their children back to the market to enjoy the benefits and fun of POP.
Watch for lots of POP events at The Downtown South Boston Farmers Market and be sure to bring your children. They will not only have fun, but will learn more about nutrition and the origins of food to help them make better food choices!
